実にスタート以来初めて陸地を見た。2ヶ月ぶりだ。
ここフォークランド沖には日本の冒険家の逸話がある。
日本が誇る大冒険家・植村直己さん。子供の頃からの憧れの人である。日本人初のエベレスト登頂や北極、グリーランドを犬ソリで走破するなど、いつもワクワクさせられた。
植村さんと師匠・多田雄幸さんは親友で、植村さんが北極に行った時にアマチュア無線局オーロラベースを担当していた。
植村さんが念願の南極横断を目指した時に、アルゼンチン基地が全面的バックアップを約束してくれた。いよいよ南極のアルゼンチン基地に入って準備していたところ、イギリスとアルゼンチンがフォークランド島の領有権をめぐりいわゆるフォークランド紛争が勃発。
植村さんはアルゼンチンの協力を得られなくなり、南極横断を断念。どれほど悔しかったであろう。
引きあげの船の中、ちょうどそこに第一回BOCチャレンジに参加しているオケラ5世の多田さんとすれ違うのである。ものすごい偶然だ！
その時にアマチュア無線で多田さんが植村さんに「南極は逃げないから」と植村さんを励ました。
実はその時の会話の録音テープが存在します。
それを聞いた時に感動したものです。
そんなことを思い出しながら走っています。
もう植村さんも多田もこの世にいないのがとても寂しいです。
少しでも僕がその心意気を引き継ぎたいと思います。
The first piece of land I have seen since the start! More than two months after the start, it feels so good to see land!The Falkland Islands are a special place for the Japanese adventurers history.The great Naomi Uemura, a Japanese adventurer, the first Japanese to climb Mount Everest, he also was the first Japanese to stand on the South Pole. I always admired his feat. Uemura and my mentor Yukoh Tada were great friends. Tada was also helping Uemura with radio transmission during his expeditions.In 1983, when Tada was racing in the first BOC Challenge that saw him be the first Japanese to ever win a round the world race, Uemura was on his adventure to get to the South Pole on the Antarctic continent.Right at that time, the Falklands War was declared and Uemura had to retreat from his attempt. The beaten Uemura was on his way back to Japan when Tada was sailing right around the Falkland Islands.They were able to communicate through radio, and Tada was able to cheer Uemura up.“The antarctic will not disappear!” Those were the words of Tada to Uemura.
I am now sailing close to this point. It is a great feeling to feel the story of my mentor.Tada and Uemura are not with us anymore but I would like to continue their legacy they have left in the Japanese adventurers history.
